If you're looking for a good old-fashioned, fun, scary movie, look no further than The Cat and the Canary. This silent gem is so full of predictable clichés that one has to remind themselves that these tired and true devices most likely originated with this film.
All that being said, Paul Leni's ahead of its time direction is what gives this film it's lasting power. From the cartoonish titles to the creepy fun performances of a wonderful ensemble cast, The Cat and the Canary should please even the most jaded horror movie fan.
The story involves a predictable group of unlikable family members gathering in an old house for the reading of a will. When only one member is selected to inherit the millions, others end up either dead or missing and then the trek begins to figure out the one behind it all.
With top notch performances by Martha Maddox, Tully Marshall and Laura La Plante, The Cat and the Canary manages to stay fresh and clever despite the fact that we've seen this all before. Worth checking out on a dark and stormy night.
