Before she became the "It" girl, Clara Bow appeared in a staggering number of films (29 to be exact) between 1924 and 1926. Many of those films are lost today, but the ones that do survive are proof of the sex appeal that this talented actress had. If you are looking for signs of that sex appeal, Kid Boots does not disappoint.
Primarily a vehicle for Eddie Cantor, this fast-paced love story has it all. In fact it probably has a little too much as this comedy is all over the place. The first half is reminiscent of some of the very best of Harold Lloyd as Cantor's character not only falls victim to love at first sight, but also manages to become the only witness in a nasty divorce case leading to mistaken identities, a jealous boyfriend, evil attorneys and a final race to the court house to finalize a divorce of one couple and the marriage of another.
The weakness of this film falls in the second half where the film suddenly feels more like a Mack Sennett chase movie then the quirky romantic comedy that it started out as. It's still a fun movie to watch even if the second half doesn't quite live up to the first.
Clara Bow is charming as ever and shows that she had "it" long before that movie with the same title. However, it's Eddie Cantor's performance that proves he had the chops to be a major silent film comedian. You may watch Kid Boots for Clara Bow, but it will be Eddie Cantor you will talk about when it's over.
